Many of us were quite sad to see Mandy Patinkin leave Criminal Minds. Of course, Joe Mantegna is wonderful on the show, but Patinkin created his character as the series was starting out. The change was abrupt and surprising at the time.

But now there’s great news. Mandy Patinkin is coming back to a new TV series called Homeland as co-star with Claire Danes.

Homeland will air on Showtime and is from the executive producers of 24. With a cast like this and producers with that kind of pedigree, the show is likely to be a success. Here’s a brief description:

[The series] centers on American POW Scott Brody, who returns home 10 years after going missing in Iraq, and Carrie Anderson (Danes), a driven CIA officer who suspects he might be plotting an attack on America. Patinkin will play the smart and politically savvy CIA Division Chief emeritus Saul Berenson who is Carrie’s main champion in the intelligence upper echelon and her sounding board.

Homeland’s pilot begins production on January 10, so be sure to check back here for updates on its air date.
