Starz is developing a new series, Torchwood, a spinoff for the classic Dr. Who. And fans of Lie to Me will be pleased to know that Mekhi Phifer has been cast in the lead. He’ll be playing CIA agent Rex Matheson when the series airs. The show’s creator, Russell T. Davies describes the character this way:

Rex is described as a character who’s rising in the agency’s ranks and has a very sharp sense of humor.

It will be great to see Mekhi back on prime time since The Lightman Group on Lie to Me split from working with the FBI. Phifer is also known for his roles in ER, 8 Mile, Soul Food and several episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm. He also stars in a Lifetime movie called Close Quarters that will air in 2011.
