Los Angeles, CA (CNS) – The police drama “Southland” is making its way back to your television set, this time on a new channel. The former NBC series will be moving to TNT with a network premiere on January 12. Executive Producers Chris Chulack and Ann Biderman sat down with reporters to discuss the new season and what fans can expect. Stars of the show Michael Cudlitz, Regina King and Ben McKenzie were also there to answer questions and discuss their excitement over the newest season. The series is set in Los Angeles and follows the experiences and lives of cops, criminals, victims and their families. The series stars Cudlitz as John Cooper, an experienced officer assigned to train rookie Ben Sherman, played by McKenzie. King plays Detective Lydia Adams, a woman trying to balance work with the responsibility of caring for her mother. When asked about what would be different about this season, producers Chulack and Biderman elaborated. Chulack explains saying, “Everybody forgets that our pick up for last year was for six episodes and we knew that’s all we were going to do. So, that impacted the stories we were telling because we knew we only had the pilot plus six. This year, we thought we had at least had thirteen. So, just by the number of episodes by its nature it was going to be a little different in the storytelling.” Biderman told reporters, “In general, you’re always trying to find that balance. You want the characters to deepen and have complicated lives — and be complicated, interesting characters.” Former “OC” star Ben McKenzie likes the “indie” feel of the series, saying, “We’re operating with a relatively small crew. We’re shooting out on location. We’re going really fast. We have to go really fast, but everybody is really coming knowing their jobs and wanting to excel in their jobs. So, I think it’s exhilarating because of that. That, to me, makes it unique and I think it translates to the screen.” McKenzie continues saying, “The spontaneity of the show, the realism of somewhat subtle moments between a couple of characters, you only get that if everybody is stepping up their game and is trying to be as realistic as they can be.” TNT will be presenting 13 episodes of the series beginning on Tuesday, January 12 with a commercial-free extended presentation of the pilot episode that will feature never-before-seen footage. Starting on Tuesday, March 2, TNT will then air six all-new episodes. [Source: All Headline News]

Here’s a quick video interview with Southland’s Regina King on the Wendy Williams show. (Rumor has it that her top secret boyfriend is Malcolm Jamal Warner.)
Southland fans will have more to cheer about when the former NBC cop show premieres on TNT, on January 12 (10/9 pm). Six minutes more to be precise. That’s how much unseen footage will be seen when the pilot returns in an extended version. The seven previously aired episodes will then be followed by six new episodes. Among the new and extended scenes: Rookie cop Ben (Ben McKenzie) learns something about his veteran partner John (Michael Cudlitz) that will be an issue throughout the 13 episodes. His drug use? His homosexuality? His weird eating habits? We won’t tell. But their relationship will get stronger. You want more about the affair between gang unit detective Sal (Michael McGrady) and that TV reporter Mia (Lisa Vidal)? Two new scenes will explain their feelings towards one another and Sal’s moral struggle with cheating on his wife. And if you don’t understand why Sammy (Shawn Hatosy) stays with his uber-crazy wife Tammy (Emily Bergl), there’s a little more insight into that dysfunctional relationship. [Source: TV Guide]

THE VIDEOLAND VIEW: Benjamin McKenzie tells us it’s been frustrating waiting to find out the fate of “Southland,” but he feels good about the show’s future now that it’s found a new home at TNT. “It was obviously unfortunate the way it went down. Shows do get canceled. We didn’t see it coming so it was a bit of a shock for all of us,” admits McKenzie about NBC greenlighting a second season and then abruptly canceling it. “It’s frustrating when you’re in the middle of that. You get angry and impatient because we had to sort of sit around for the last couple of months while they went through the process of selling it. But if the end result of this whole process is that we end up on TNT and we have a home there for years to come, and we can make the show that we want to make that we weren’t able to make on NBC, then that’s a great outcome,” he notes. TNT will begin airing the entire first season starting Jan. 12 and then they will air six episodes that have already been shot for season two. “TNT needs a little time, obviously, to gear up to promote the show. I’m excited for people to see not only the new version of the pilot, which has additional footage in it, but these new episodes, which I think are some of the best we’ve done. I think fans of the show will be rewarded for their patience,” he says. “Now that we’re on cable, we don’t have to deliver as big of a number as we did on NBC. If we get that core audience to follow us to TNT, then I think we could be around for a while.” In the meantime, McKenzie plans to take it easy during the Christmas holidays. “I’m just going back home to Austin, Texas, where I’m from, to spend time with my family. I’ll eat some good food, get some gifts and just enjoy my time off.” [Source: National Ledger]
