This review was on the web site of Joss Whedon, the creator of such TV vampire series as Buffy and Angel. He certainly knows his vampires. Here’s the review of the series pilot for Vampire Diaries.
In the dead of night, a couple navigates an abandoned country road. They are young, beautiful and dressed in accordance with the latest fashions. Suddenly, a fog rolls in over the car and their romantic banter. The woman screams out a warning but, alas, it’s too late, and their car strikes a solitary figure half obscured by the fog. In a panic, the man rushes from the car, dropping to the ground next to the crumpled body. He feels for a pulse, but of course the fallen man has none. Within seconds though, their rolls are reversed, and victim becomes victor. The figure in the fog is, naturally, a vampire, and the comely couple his next meal. So begins the pilot episode of the CW’s latest supernatural teen drama, Vampire Diaries.

People who are fans of the book series Vampire Diaries know of this character already. I have no word yet on who will play the part, but will update you as details are released.
The CW’s new fall series, The Vampire Diaries, is casting a new series regular to debut in episode six. The character, Alaric Saltzman, is a fan favorite from the series of books upon which the series is based. He is a young twenty-something history teacher whom executive producer Kevin Williamson described to me as “hot.” The series will also be casting several local residents in Virginia, where the show shoots, to play several townspeople, including students’ parents, the town sheriff and a pastor. Applicants must not have an aversion to sharp pointy teeth. [Source: TV Guide]
